As I understand it the install script should work without having the Zlib extention enabled. If I do not have the extention enabled I get "Call to undefined function: gzuncompress() in /var/www/ug/forum/install.php on line 331".

On the first step of installation the extention is described like so:

Zlib Extension:
zlib extension is optional, however we recommend enabling it. This extension allow you to compress your forum backups as well as use zlib compression for your pages.

If it is required for the installation this wording is inaccurate.

Install script supports both compressed & non-compressed archives. The check has a bug, which is why you got a PHP error and not an installer warning indicating you have no-zlib support and the archive is compressed. I'll look into this issue.
