Is it possible(in 2.5.0) to allow each user to delete posts that he /she made? I edited the group for a test forum to allow for deleting of posts by all registered users, but that effectively gives everyone the delete power of a moderator.

The delete permission as you've found out gives the user the ability to delete any message is the forums control by the group. There is no feature allowing users to delete their own message because this simply should not be done. If a user made a typo they can edit their own message and correct it, but there really should be no reason for people to delete their own messages. This action is just too disruptive to the continuity of the forum.
