If I have path_info based theme how would I preserv it while upgrading to 2.6 ?

What do you mean? Did you customize the theme and want to retain the changes?

If so simply backup the modified files and then re-implement the changes after the upgrade.

As far as I understand propely you did some changes to path_info templates. Should I copy templates over my theme folder.

I'm not using path_info theme itself, I've created my copy bc_path_info and then implemented some changes.

The path_info theme was drastically changed. Previously you basically had the entire copy of the default theme with different URLs. Now you just have the different URLs inside the path_info templates.

This means that after upgrading you should apply your changes to the tmpl files inside the default/tmpl/ directory.

so should I use just default theme (with my changes) and to specify "Use path_info style" in Global configuration?

Or create a new theme based on default (path_info?)?

Just use the default theme with your changes. Creating new themes only makes sense IF you plan to have different active theme.
