Can you please provide a bit more info: What installer have you downloaded? Where is it failing? What is the exact error (please cut and paste the entire message)?

UPDATE: OK, this message means your installer is smaller than what it should be. Please download it again and use the md5 checksum to check if it's complete.

Can you please download and run the 2.8.0 upgrade script. Make a complete backup of your forum before you start.

Update: I've just followed your instructions to see if I get the same problem with the installer, without any luck...

It didn't make sense that this error would be caused by running the full install over the top of an existing install. I did some checking. I was able to duplicate this error with a fresh install on linux with FUDforum_2-8-0.tar.gz.

Here is a listing of phpinfo() stuff, minus some private details.

No problems with the zlib version. This comes back to my earlier complaint that something is up with the non-zlib stuff. It probably has something to do with server configuration. It clearly isn't just affecting me.

Because I think it is related, I am including the error a few community members received trying to upgrade an existing system with the non-zlib version. Again, you can find my server configuration here.

Warning: fread() [function.fread]: Length parameter must be greater than 0 in /home/marticus/public_html/FUDforum2/upgrade.php on line 874

Warning: gzuncompress() [function.gzuncompress]: data error in /home/marticus/public_html/FUDforum2/upgrade.php on line 874

Archive did not pass checksum test, CORRUPT ARCHIVE!
If you've encountered this error it means that you've:
    downloaded a corrupt archive
uploaded the archive in ASCII and not BINARY mode
your FTP Server/Decompression software/Operating System added un-needed cartrige return ('\r') characters to the archive, resulting in archive corruption.
