All changed files are backed-up to the forum's errors/.backup/ directory.

If you want to change your theme, you should preferably create a separate template set to prevent subsequent upgrades (which may contain changes to the default theme) from overwriting your changes. If you don't plan to make any drastic theme changes, it's perfectly OK to use the default theme.
