I have a suggestion to make (based on 2.8.1):

CODE tags are replaced by post_proc.inc.t l.478:

<div class="pre"><pre>

Instead, they should be replaced by pre_reg.tmpl for allowing more customization in themes.

I realize that I can use div.pre pre { for css formatting (and that's what I'm going to do probably).

Not sure I understand. Do you want to define the HTML for the code-tag in post_proc.tmpl? If so, I guess you are more than welcome to prepare a patch for it.
