I've noticed that the New Topic button always appears, even if the user does not have permission to create topics in the particular forum. I think it would be less confusing if it simply wasn't there in this case.

But why have it there if they aren't permitted to post in that forum? When they click on it, they just get an error message telling them they aren't permitted.

When they see the link they click on it and are told they are not permitted to do so and are given links allowing them to either login to existing account or create a new one.

Yes, but they get this even if they *are* logged in, and just not permitted to post to the topic. I have a few "read only" forums for announcements, that only moderators can post to.

Forum does not know at that point whether the user has posting permissions or not. Having to perform the check would require some additional operations. And the issue is not that critical.
