Cannot replicate are you sure this was not a copy & paste error?

Here is what I tried to replicate the bug with:

$tag{name} =~ s/(^<|>$)//g;
$tag{name} =~ s/(^&lt;|&gt;$)//g;

&gt; &lt; < >  
$tag{name} =~ s/(^<|>$)//g;
$tag{name} =~ s/(^&lt;|&gt;$)//g;
