Thank you for that tip, btw. I didn't know the initial header fetch only
included a minimal set of header fields. I had assumed (bad habit, I
know...) it included all of the headers, but not the body.

That's what I do. Sometimes, if I have some time to kill, I'll read a
few posts that were scored below my usual viewing threshold. Filtering
isn't an absolute banishing of Google Groups users from my sight until
the end of time, just a quick and easy guideline to help minimize the
noise.

Yup. YW. I learned it from a poster in n.s.r a couple years ago. I've
forgotten whom. There'll be a list somewhere of which header fields are
and are not included in 'header fetch' but it's too dark yet this
morning to go googling...

Using Thunderbird I've been filtering at the account level using "Path
contains googlegroups" with consistent success.

That would work, I'm sure, but as far as I remember is a filter in the
"expensive" category, where you need to download the whole post in order
to get that field. If you change to Message-ID contains googlegroups it
will be much more efficient.
I wish I could find the list of which header items are included in just
a header fetch. There are only a few: Message-ID, From, Subject, Lines
or Size, maybe one or two more. "Organization" is not one, and I think
neither is Path.

Is that true for POP account mail? I can set filters at the server (web
access) but am limited to "from" address. Since both Path and Message-ID
are in the headers, when the headers are downloaded to Thunderbird
(3.1.6) is not the "expense" the same for both filters?

I do not know. There should be a standard (research RFCs?) though it
might vary by ISPs/mail servers...

Seems to be typical of web access to mail, and is similar to my own
various web-accessible email servers.

But are they in a check of only (email) headers? I can't say, but
suspect you would have to download the entire email to see them by your
email client. I also suspect average folk do not have procedures in
place to fetch only headers of email and instead just download all.

After putting in Message-ID contains googlegroups.com I didn't receive
any spam this morning.

Since I use markread instead of delete, I can switch modes and see
what's up. I do see about 8 or 9 spams from "ferox gold" in this group
in the last dozen hours. Completely hidden from normal view... :-)

Likewise using markread (but filtering on Path) through
eternal-september, after setting View to ALL I see none of those.

Here: http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1036
<quote>
The required header lines are "From", "Date", "Newsgroups", "Subject",
"Message-ID", and "Path".
The optional header lines are "Followup-To", "Expires", "Reply-To",
"Sender", "References", "Control", "Distribution", "Keywords",
"Summary", "Approved", "Lines", "Xref", and "Organization".
</quote>
So, Path will be included, and can be used for filtering with a header
fetch. Though I still think I prefer the Message-ID. ;-)

That defines the format of messages, not the NNTP protocol; for the
latter, the current RFC is 3977:
<http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3977>
> <quote>
> The required header lines are "From", "Date", "Newsgroups", "Subject",
> "Message-ID", and "Path".
>
> The optional header lines are "Followup-To", "Expires", "Reply-To",
> "Sender", "References", "Control", "Distribution", "Keywords",
> "Summary", "Approved", "Lines", "Xref", and "Organization".
> </quote>
That's a list of what headers are required to be in a message, not the
ones that must be returned by the NNTP OVER command. Section 8.3.2 of
RFC3977 lists the latter:
"0" or article number (see below)
Subject header content
From header content
Date header content
Message-ID header content
References header content
:bytes metadata item
:lines metadata item
Note that the above list is different from that given in 1036 - it
includes References, but not Newsgroups or Path. Even so, Organization
isn't in either list, so that difference is academic.
It gets more interesting though; filtering on a field that's not in the
above list *still* doesn't necessarily require fetching a full article.
If the server supports the optional HDR (Section 8.5) command, that
can be used to fetch a single header field for one or more articles. A
client that wants to use that can use the LIST HEADERS (Section 8.6)
command to see what headers can be fetched by the HDR command.
So, a sufficiently-intelligent client that's connected to a sufficiently-
advanced server could, upon finding a filter that uses a header that's
not returned by the OVER command, use a HDR command to fetch the
additional header fields it needs.
The question then becomes whether a given client is smart enough to
do so, and whether the server to which it's connected supports the
optional commands it would need to do so.
Nothing is *ever* as simple as it seems, is it? :-)

I switched to etermal-september.org and am using the same filters as I
did when I was with giganews (plus the Message-ID on googlegroups). I
use Thunderbird.
I am having a problem killfiling one poster Xxx Yyy whose email address
is xxyyy(at)gmail(dot)com. (Obviously, I am not using his real name here).
I have tried the From contains xxyyy(at)gmail(dot)com, is xxyyy(at)gmail(dot)com, and
contains yyy. I have done the action as delete and as Mark as read (I
only view unread). Nothing seems to work and his posts show up whereas
they didn't with giganews.
I have no idea why nor what I can do to get rid of that retard's posts
from even appearing.

Unless you have a typo ... it's hard to say without actually seeing one
or more of the posts. How about sending me two or so of his Message-IDs?
And state which group these are in. Use the Contact Me form here:

This does not have to do with Message-ID. It is on the "From". The
posts are in a moderated news group, so the Message-IDs are all from the
central server through which all the posts gp through, his as well as
all the other post.
BTW, in TB how do you whitelist. The instructions on your site said to
whitelist techrider.net.

I just checked again (I still get giganews) for a particular message
from him on the giganews and on eternal-september. It was not there on
giganews but it is there on eternal-september.
Both servers have the absolutely identical conditions in the killfile
"From" is xxxyyy(at)gmail(dot)com
or "From" contains yyy
to mark it as read.
The file was received at 6:17PM (four hours ago).
I just don't understand the inconsistency.

I know that. It was so I could look up the post(s) and see what was in
the headers.

Is this a public Usenet group? If not, describe. If it's a moderated
group, why isn't the moderator killing the posts? You did say the group
is on e-s; what group is it?

teKrider.net ... The whitelisting applies to:

OK. I didn't understand that.

Yes. soc.culture.jewish.moderated.

If you were to provide a Message-ID from the 'offending person', it
might be possible to see what you need to filter.

All the posters have individual Message-IDs. No "central server" is
assigning them. It's no different than this group.

Ok, there are not many posting there (in the last several hundred posts)
that use a gmail address. I don't notice anything strange in their
headers that would prevent filtering just one of them.
So you can still send me the person's name, or several of their
Message-IDs, else there isn't much else to do to help you.

If you are not using Challenge/Response, either via special software, or
through the ISP's mail server, there is no need.
Regarding Tbird, I think you can set it to only accept mail to your
Inbox from people in your address book, and redirect all the rest to,
say, the Junk folder, or delete them (risky).

I figured it out and it was a very stupid error on my part. In the
message filter I had the wrong radio control checked. It was looking
for a match on ALL rather than a match on ANY. Since two other people
were in the same filter, it is no wonder that if failed to filter.
Thanks for your help.

I figured as much. You actually were a big help. When I was composing
the message to you on your site, and put in the Message-ID, I went to
copy in the exact filter I was using. It was then that I noticed that I
had "ALL" rather than "ANY" checked.

Aha!! <g>
That irritable person is gone now, eh? Good! I'll unsubscribe from
your group...
