Hello,
Have downloaded the en.html.gz and took it to Staples Office Supply so
I could get it printed on both sides of the paper. They couldn't even
read the file, never mind print it. Would the en.tar.gs have the same
problem?
Have I missed the availability of a PDF version (which I know Staples
can print)?
Please, thanks,
Graham H

Have you tried uncompressing the .gz archive, and taking them the
uncompressed .html file?

This appears to be close to what you want.

http://us3.php.net/download-docs.php

Click on English chm file, download.

Right click on the file, properties, click on Unblock, OK.

Open chm file. File > Print... ( * ) Print the selected heading and all
subtopics. Choose PDF print driver. Print.

Send kids off to college. By the time they graduate it will finish
printing. It's a big puppy.

Alternately, you can separately print the major sections, then combine
them. Each section will print in about a semester or so.

Bill/Sherm,
Will look into what you suggest.
The printing company route is because my printer only prints one side.
I want to take a single file to Staples, have them print the manual
double sided and then bind it .. my bedtime reading. Do either of your
suggestions do this?
How many double sided pages are we talking about?
Cheers and thanks,
Graham
P.S. When I downloaded I ignored the CHM because it said 'then you do
... dedah dedah' - was discouraged by that but might be what I want eh?

I downloaded a version that is "lots of little html files".
There are 10 000 of them!
You will have quite a thick manual.

Hi MG,
Thanks for the info.
Are you suggesting that printed double side there will be 5000 pages -
surely that must be with hints, tips, examples? Do you think there is
such thing as a 'core' manual'?
Can you imagine the time/cost of having a printing house print
thousands of little pages from a thousand little files, a likely
preponderance of half filled pages, what a waste of paper - is absurd.
I think Sherm or Bill suggested I unzip the gz file. I did that and I
think I saw rthe same as you .. multitudes of little files.
Is a single PDF file non existent?
Has already taken me a week to try and print this thing - nothing
should be this hard!

I will not try to dissuade you of printing the whole megillah if that is
your desire, but I think you may find it a long, long run for a very
short slide. At php.net not only will you find the manual content (on
their web site) you also have the benefit of comments and code snippets
from a lot of accomplished programmers. I have found that using it as a
reference for specific issues works quite well.

If you are looking for an structured approach, I suggest you look into
courses at your community college. The instructor is likely to make
sense of all of the technical information (from the manual) in a
practical, applicable way.

And, 5,000 pages is a lot of trees.

yes,

after downloading:
$ file php_manual_en.html.gz
php_manual_en.html.gz: gzip compressed data, from Unix
$ gunzip php_manual_en.html.gz
$ file php_manual_en.html
php_manual_en.html: gzip compressed data, was "php-bigxhtml.html", from
Unix, last modified: Fri Dec 31 12:25:02 2010, max compression

now i'm out of options..... ;)

So I'm not going to get my PDF 'core manual' (as in 100-200 pages) am
I :). Seems it's just not out there ... sigh...
Appreciate your comments, will think thereto.

Graham, the manual isn't made for printing. It's made to be an online
reference, and is therefore optimized for online viewing and searching,
not printing.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any PDF replacement for it, but from
what's available online, the pdf is likely to be huge also - probably
thousands of pages. There's a lot of information there!

Your best bet might be to just get a book on PHP. Alternatively, you
could get an ebook reader which reads html files. Not as good as a
hardcover book, IMHO, but pretty nice.

Hi,

As J. Stuckle says, it might be a better idea to buy a reference book on
HTML. I have a fat Wrox Press book (on PHP 4) which is quite complete, and
that I hardly ever look at.

My PHP manual is in CHM format. I have installed a little utility called PHP
Creator, that installs as a Windows printer. I tested selecting a section
(III. Language Reference), and sending it to print. It produced a 147 pages
PDF file that doesn't include page breaks on every new theme, but is pretty
understandable when read on screen (of course, I didn't actually print it).

Sorry. The actual name is PDF Creator, and it is one among the many
utilities that allow the user to direct print to a PDF file.

And it installs spyware that interferes with your browser if you are not
careful. Do not install, or uninstall, the browser toolbar of Pdf Creator.

(Good to see that you finally managed to declare your character encoding.
Perhaps there is hope for you yet.)

Yes. I am not completely wasted, nor totally deaf to constructive
advice.

Does PDF Creator carry spyware in itself, or is it only the toolbar?

Good. So you won't mind my referring you to
<http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html>.

> Does PDF Creator carry spyware in itself, or is it only the toolbar?

AFAIK it is only the browser toolbar. IIRC, it replaces 404 error messages
with a redirection, and to do that it must intercept HTTP requests, which
means that they can know which sites you are visiting and which login
credentials you send there.

Hi Jerry,
Well that sums it up. I like hardcopy, makes for far easier reading
during down moments and usually quite educational. Tried ebooks in
another context but not comfortable and online is good for answering
specific questions at given moments. So guess I'll look into a PHP
book.

I came to this forum specifically for the same info as the OP, so I'm
glad I'm not alone here. I downloaded the most recent CHM file which
of course has the basic doc material but none of the User Contributed
Notes. I've found over time that those notes contain invaluable
insight which make them more valuable than most of the dry text.

Is there a download that includes all of the latest user notes? I
don't want to print this info but it's sure nice to have it available
off-line on a PDA or laptop for "light reading". I'd want to refresh
that off-line repository every month or so. I don't care about
format, whether HTML, PDF, or CHM.

Thanks!

Tony, I agree the notes contain valuable information. Some older
versions of the .chm files had to copies - one with notes and one
without (for those with limited disk space and/or download bandwidth).
I don't know why recent versions don't continue that option.

The script chain they used to build that version didn't have an active
maintainer and eventually stopped working as the XML sources of the
manual were being improved and reorganized. When it got too outdated it
was finally removed.

That's a nice area to help if someone's willing to support an open
source project with work.

Ah, so that's what happened. It makes sense. I wish someone would step
in and help. If I had the time, I would be glad to, although I'm not
real good at building .chm files.

Thanks for the info, Ãlvaro,
