Hello, everyone.

I have the latest builds of Apache, MySql and PHP under Windows XP. I
have configured and tested the setup to verify it works. I want to take
advantage of the ease of porting that the ADODB PHP extensions will
afford as I begin conversion of my old, outdated VB/Access projects to
HTML/PHP/MySql. I am using mysqli as my database connection.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel (which I won't do well or timely,
since robust error-handling doesn't come cheap, time-wise), so I looked
for a decent library with pre-built database querying routines. ADODB
looked quite useful, since all my old database apps are written in
VB/DAO. Porting to the ADODB interface to PHP/MySql will significantly
reduce my conversion labors.

Sadly, it seems that I can only return one-column recordsets by this
method, though, since any attempt to return a recordset with two or more
columns horribly crashes Apache with the generic 0xC0000005 exception.
I'm assuming I've set something up wrong, but so much else works.

This code does work properly:

Each statement executes, as confirmed by rudimentary debugging (placing
'echo' statements intermediately between each line, and stepping through
each line using commented-out iterations of the code).

Any of these also work fine, appended individually as the next statement
following the last, above:

// returns list of table names (28 rows)

$rs = $db->Execute("SELECT 1");
// returns '1' (1 row)

$rs = $db->Execute("SELECT ClassID FROM tblClasses");
// returns all 7 rows

// returns all 7 rows

These, individually appended, crash Apache:

$rs = $db->Execute("SELECT 1, 2");
// should return 1 row of 2 columns

$rs = $db->Execute("SELECT ClassID, ClassName FROM tblClasses");
// should return 7 rows, 2 columns

$rs = $db->Execute("SELECT * FROM tblClasses");
// should return 7 rows, 4 columns

I can return multiple columns with this normal PHP code:

Hmmm, an application should never be able to cause Apache to die with an
exception. There may be an incompatibility between your version of PHP
and the one ADODB was compiled with, or a bug in the ADODB code. It may
also be it requires the php_mysql extension (which I see you have
disabled). I don't know.

In any case, your best support is from the people who wrote the code
(which I see you have done). They know their product better than anyone
else.

But personally, if I were converting it, I'd just rewrite the code using
mysqli or PDO. If your VB/DAO code is that old, chances are it has some
security holes in it also. Additionally, there are differences between
Access and MySQL, so you'll have to make changes anyway.

I did try the try, actually, as my subsequent step, and was greeted with
the same exception and no information at all by the handler. It appears
that the catch can't catch the error. Which I guess is why they call it
try. ;)

Letting my MSVC debugger take control of the exception, I get,
"Unhandled exception in httpd.exe (PHP_MYSQLI.DLL): 0xC0000005: Access
Violation".

I did notice since enabling all warnings that I consistently get this
warning message, which seems related:

"Warning: mysqli_connect() [function.mysqli-connect]: Headers and client
library minor version mismatch. Headers:50051 Library:50153 in [my unit]"

Research and dig as I might, I can't really come up with much relevant
to my issue with this. Seems a rarely encountered error, and for
reasons I don't share.

Jerry may have been correct in his suspicion that there might be an
incompatibility between the latest PHP and the one ADODB was compiled
with. But then why wouldn't it have affected more people?

At any rate, I am grateful for your responses to my abrupt (and slightly
off-topic) beg. It has helped me to see things more clearly. Trying to
elucidate the problem in a well-documented fashion has helped, as well,
as it always does.

As I indicate in my reply to Jerry, I am fast approaching the trash bin
drop-off for this extension.

As I state in my reply to Denis, I think you may be right about the
incompatibility. I disabled the php_mysql module in my attempts to
drill down on the issue. I had thought it might have been a potential
source of conflict. The issue exists either way.

Thanks for seeing that. They should know their product better, but it
appears help is rare, which is why I thought I'd have better luck on the
good old Usenet. :)

You're right about that, too. If I could have used the extension, it
would have shaved considerable time porting the in-line parametric data
querying I seem to have been so fond of implementing in my applications.
Nevertheless, there is much that has to be done, anyway, and the time
I spend trying to debug the extension will soon outpace any time cost
savings.

Golly. I seem to have it anyway.
Oh well. It works fine for me, using the older calls and not the class
stuff.

Probably does work fine. I'm new to all this and was just trying to go
"by the book" to avoid complications. Learning 3 and 1/2 new systems
and languages simultaneously to replace 3 others in order to perform a
functional port of a useful application is a bit of a daunting task for
one out-of-date character. :)

However, I seem to have no problems accessing the database using mysqli
alone, either, so the ADODB add-on seems to be the sole cause of the
nasty crashes. I should try duplicating my working mysqli code using
comparable mysql functions to see if the warning messages go away.
They're only warnings, though, and I think I'd still want to make mysqli
work, since mysql functions may eventually be deprecated if they're
"strongly" encouraging a move.

There's been no indication that the older mysql_xxx() functions are
going to be deprecated. To do so would break millions of websites
around the world. It's going to be a long time before they do that.

mysqli_xxx() extensions are arguably "better", especially if you're into
OO techniques. But for plain old function calls, I also find
mysql_xxx() to work quite well.

Since you're starting out fresh, probably the mysqli_xxx() calls are
better; better yet would be to use the OO classes.
