December 2012 Web Server Survey

If you take a look at the charts for

Market Share for Top Servers Across All Domains
Market Share for Active Sites Across All Domains

You can see that MS is declining faster than Apache.

Somehow I don't think it's a very scientific survey, and could be off by
a long ways.

The data you cite is irrelevant to this problem. Contrary to popular
belief, PHP is not limited to Apache servers, GNU/Linux, or to the server
side at all.

Usually the TIOBE Programming Community Index is cited as reference for the
popularity of a programming language. According to it, PHP's popularity has
not changed within the last year:

Please do not feed the trolls, and do get a full name.

Yet, the same URL shows that the trend line for PHP is downward.

How did you get that idea?

There is nothing silly about it. Posting with one's full name is customary
in Usenet. Because 1. it is basically polite to introduce oneself to
strangers using one's full name (before asking for their help, and consuming
their free time), and 2. there is more than one “Mike S” and more than one
“Richard” out there; omitting the full name (first and last name) leads to
confusion. Some people, like me, also insert their nickname to avoid
confusion if even the full name does not suffice; others insert their second
name in abbreviated form. Read RFCs 1855, 5536, and several Usenet guides.

That woudl not solve things for /me
Because at least 2 persons (including meself) have the same full-name

So, i still don't see why i should put my full-name here...

Well, Luuk, since your posts arrive here just fine without it, that
clearly means that, in fact, you don't have to, whatever PointyHead
chooses to say.

It's just PointyHead acting like an infants' school mistress from the
1950s; all he actually succeeds in doing is looking like a fool. Feel
free to tell him to fuck off from time to time; it's good for him.

I looked at the mult-year trend line graph at the URL.

Of course your position is silly because I can slap whatever "name" I
feel like it on my posts and you will be no more "introduced" to me
than if I put on my full name.

> Posting with one's full name is customary

Since when? If anything, usenet has a long and rich history of
pseudonyms and anonymous posting. Much more so than email, for
instance.

At one point, someone like you insisted that I post my "real name" or
they wouldn't take my posts seriously. I immediately slapped a fake
name on my post and then they started addressing the content of my
message instead of the label on my From header. They merely served to
prove my point that insisting that someone else post with their "real
name" or "full name" is a silly position to take.

At any rate, if you want to be the Emily Post of Usenet, this is the
wrong newsgroup.

Richard, please don't feed the trolls.

I don't mind first names or 'nyms. The only problem is when some people
try to hide behind a 'nym in order to troll anonymously. You aren't one
of those.

Section "Very Long Term History":
PHP Dec 2007: Position 4
PHP Dec 2012: Position 6
Thus, PHP lost two positions in 5 years.

Greetings,

Wrong. It is *YOU* who wish to ignore people whom you feel haven't
revealed their "real name". It is you who are losing out, not me. I
am not an egotist and I don't post to usenet for the sake of seeing my
own name splattered across the bitstreams; I post to usenet to share
my point of view and knowledge. (In technical newsgroups, more the
latter than the former.) It is *YOU* who are losing out by ignoring
posts from people who don't satisfy your niggling little Emily Post
rules. I could care less whether you read my posts or not.

As I said, I could post under a fake real name for years (and I have)
and people like you would sit there smugly thinking they are
responding
to my real name, when you aren't. I would just laugh at you every
single
time because it's a silly position to take.

I laugh at you now.

I also laugh at you because you insist on decorating my 7-bit clean
quoted material with pointless 8-bit characters.

Graph “Long term trends”:
PHP 2001: ca. 2.5%
PHP 2012: ca. 5.0%
Thus, “PHP has doubled its popularity in the last 11 years.”

Main Section “TIOBE Programming Community Index for December 2012”:
PHP Dec 2011: Position 6
PHP Dec 2012: Position 6
Thus, “PHP has been steady.”

Much the same could be said about any other programming language on the
charts or tables. When interpreting (long-term) data, one must take care to
avoid the trap of bending the facts to fit the argument. For example,
suppose we were in December 2005, you could say that “The popularity of Java
has seen a deep decline for the last three years”, thus argue that “Java is
no longer the programming language of choice”. But then suppose we were in
December 2006, and look what has presumably happened to Java's popularity.
Then read the FAQ about it.
