I meant that phpinfo() reflected the changes.

No, I just edited the values in place, and
the values don't exist anywhere else in the
file, or anywhere else in /etc for that matter.
Anyway, it seems that the conf.d method is
superior for reasons that you mentioned, so
I'm happy.
