I would like to upgrade my site from 2.6.0 to 2.6.3. It appears to me that in the compiled CGI version of PHP, the only way FUDForum works is to have the files/folders "unlocked." see http://fudforum.org/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=3775&start=0&.
Maybe you would like to address this topic. I am not about to tempt fate and "lock them" just to test it. I went thru hell trying to mediate between you and my host when the host switched to the CGI version. I was resgined to having lost yet another FUDForum forum. Fortunately, this one turned out OK.
When I asked you a few days before the host actually converted to the CGI version if I would have any problems with PHP, is there anything that I could have done to avoid the problems that I eventually encountered between FUDForum and the compiled version of PHP?
And what problems am I going to experience on this topic when I upgrade to 2.6.3? Seems as though I remember FUDForum locking all the files/forums during an install. I certainly do not want to upgrade only to re-experience all the internal server error 500 errors again. I don't want to upgrade only to get locked out of my forum again.
The old feeling of being "skittish" about being able to open my FUDForum forums has returned so I am hesitant to do anything at this point.

Incorrect, the reason forum only works as unlocked is because the initial files were created by the webserver and there for owned by the webserver. When you switched to CGI now the files are being access by php-cgi running under your account and due to locked permissions the files could not be accessed. Locking the forum installed via CGI in the 1st place or the one that had been chowned is safe since the owner of the files is you.
The forum does not lock the forum during install. You will need to re-apply your theme customizations but that's about it.
