I can't see this covered in the manual anywhere.

If/when I upgrade my forum installation, what happens about changes that I have made e.g. to src and tmpl files? Also I have made changes to msg (i18n/english/msg)

Am I correct in thinkng that tmpl changes will be preserved, but src changes may not be (I'll have to back up my changes and remake them manually after upgrading?)

Is there any info in this so that I can know what I shall have to do manually after an upgrade?

The templates files are left untouched unless the new version has modified those templates. In that case your copies of templates are backed into errors/.backup directory and new versions are put in their place.
