.... I have someone who is able to post anonymously when permission is specifically denied in groups manager - They boast of being able to 'hack' fudforum.

Needless to say I'm rather concerned about this - how are they doing it?

They are not, this is caused by user removal, where by all messages attributed to the removed user are assigned to anon user.
