I initiated a search index rebuild on our server. After 30 minutes, the shell became unresponsive and after 45 the entire machine seemed to hang. I had our ISP reboot the server, now searches fail with ERROR 1016 (HY000): Can't open file: 'fud26_search.MYI' (errno: 144)
Likewise, trying to do a select count(*) from fud26_search.MYI fails as well.
First, how can I recover from this and second, how can I update my search index without hanging the server ?

You can run the rebuild script via command line, there are instructions on how to do it in the comments at the top of the script.
