I've tried opening attachment with IE and have not seen such an error, what IE version are you using? Do you have any additional plugins installed?

Does it have a problem if you open MS Word and specify the URL to the attached file?

this will not work, because word (or an other office-program like OpenOffice) cannot login first!
login with IE
click on attachment and choose 'open' -> fails
click on attachment and choose 'save as' -> OK
login with Firefox, Mozilla, ...
click on attachment and choose 'open' -> OK
click on attachment and choose 'save as' -> OK

Does it work with files not associated with Ms Office, like *.pdf for example?

it's the same with pdf
it depends on:
authentication + header("Content-Disposition: filename=") + IE
all other configurations are OK
