Check your error log, perhaps your PHP is crashing?

Did you decompress the archive the installer came in on *nix machine or on windows and then uploaded it to the server?

When you said you've checked the logs, did you check the main apache error log file?

Can you put an unmodified uncompressed installer on your system and make md5 checksum of the install.php file.

A blank screen is usually indicative of a php crash, although this in most cases will leave a message inside your web server logs. Can you do "php -l install.php" on the command line to see if perhaps the installer has parse errors? It does not on my system, but perhaps your INI settings cause a mis-parse.

I figured as much, any chance you could try a later PHP 5 release from http://snaps.php.net like 5.0.5-cvs or 5.1b3 or an older release such as 4.4.

Actually, I just created a new thread about this problem
(Had not seen this before)

I do have the same problem, using:
PHP Version 5.1.5

I am sure the problem has nothing to do with MySQL
And very unlikely with Apache 2

Maybe the PHP 5 implementation of FreeBSD?
Hummmm.... not very convinced either.

I find very probable that the "Windows Binary" trick in the beginning of the file is the problem, however seems like the script was designed so if you remove that part then the script ends up to be unusable.

Is there a solution to this problem yet?

Thanks

I think it maybe a bug in version 5.1.5 of PHP, try using a later version of PHP.

I'm pretty sure it's the Zend Multibyte bug with the upgrade script.

Did you install PHP4/5 from FreeBSD's ports with option -DWITH_MULTIBYTE ?

try editing the upgrade.php, so the first two lines are like this:

<?php
$detect_unicode=0;

This got me beyond the blank screen.

Getting beyond the blank screen didn't get me a successful upgrade.

But I recompiled my php5 without zend_multibyte support, commented out multibyte in my extensions.ini, and restarted apache and the upgrade went off without a hitch.

see here for more info
http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Mail/Message/phpdoc/3092222

So how does the PEAR installer get past this issue, since my stupid user trick of trying to set detect_unicode=0 isn't enough?

I am not sure how pair gets around the issue, but Zend Multibyte cannot be disabled short off re-compiling PHP I'm afraid.

Hi,

this problem took me several hours of searching now. The upgrade.php script (of 2.7.7rc2) didn't run until I set "decode_unicode = Off" in my php.ini file.
(Adding the line directly in the upgrade.php script didn't work.)

Hm, why is this type of packaging used. It's a compressed file anyway, wouldn't it be better to pack the content just the normal way?

Now I see the next (MySQL) error messages, let's see, what happens to me next on my way from 2.5.1 to 2.7.7rc2...
