I have permissions for anonymous users set so only "View" is set to "yes, everything else is set to "no". Anonymous users see only the name and description of each forum, nothing else.
It would be nice if they could see the forum icons, the "New messages" and "No new messages" icons (which I've customized to be relevant to the topic) and the number of messages and topics in each forum. That way, they would know that it is an active forum and might be more likely to register.

New/Old message indicators are definately a no. They are pointless this without access permissions the forum will always appear unread unless the user marks ALL messages read across the entire install.
