Duh, it was high time to fix the mess I left Smile

Apart from translating the newly added strings I applied a couple of spelling, grammar and other errors.

Changes apply to the most recent CVS.

Here's an update for the update. Some administrative messages sent via email used htmlentities for umlauts, which doesn't exactly look appealing in asci emails Smile

So here's the corrected version:

Does anybody require an updated Message file in german, according to the 'neue schwachsinnige Rechtschreibung' with:

dass instead of daß
musst instead of mußt
nimm instead of nehme
du, dein, deine, dir, dich lowercase ( if not beginning a sentence?)

This message file uses an old msg as base and won't work with newever versions of FUDforum.

I'm sorry, the underlying german msg-file came with the FUDforum_2-6-4.tar.gz downloaded Saturday. Where can I find a newer?

(By the way: In which directory do I find the adapted FAQ for a language on my server?)

You can find it in the web CVS.
http://cvs.prohost.org/c/index.cgi/FUDforum/getfile/install/forum_data/thm/ default/i18n/german/msg

The FAQ can be found inside the i18n/german/help directory.

Ilja, I do not understand one thing:
  1. In the german version the iso-8859-15 is used by FUDforum.
  2. In iso-8859-15 do all the stupid ÄÖÜäöüß, which we germans cannot live without them, lie in the same positions as in iso-8859-1.

… so, Twisted Evil do we really need those stupid entities for the 'Umlaute' and the 'ß' in the german i18n-files?

… here come the fresh help-files

iso-8859-15 != iso-8859-1

Using entities is not necessary but is safer.

Due to my officiousness now in http://cvs.prohost.org/c/index.cgi/FUDforum/getfile/install/forum_data/thm/ default/i18n/german/msg
can be found one nimmn which should be re-replaced with nehmen

and one vornimmn which should be re-replaced with vornehmen

Embarassed Ilia, I'm sorry for having produced some unnecessary extrawork for you.

I needed a formal ("Sie") german language file, so I translated the original FUD 2.7.3 german msg file.
hope I didn't re-invent the wheel Smile

So here it is, in case someone else might need it:

Do you think it would be a good idea to replace the current translation with the formal variant or to offer it side-by-side?

don't think it's a good idea to replace it, as germans can be quite picky bout formal/informal language Razz

you can't really use informal for a corporate/business site and using formal language in a community/younger-ppl-environment sounds also kinda stupid.
so I'd suggest to include both of them.

Updated translation (german and german_formal), there shouldn't be any untranslated parts compared to latest cvs.

Thank you, I know about this mistake in the current version of the German translation.

I have attached my current development version of the German translation, where I have fixed all mistakes which I know about. Of course I would be very happy about feedback. Smile

Don't know what I have done wrong, I thought that I did it as usual. I have attached a new attempt.

I have noticed that there is a german_formal/help/readingposting.hlp.orig file in CVS, could you please delete it?
By the way do you know why the german_formal folder is not visible in web CVS?

Eh, what patch did you use - the latest one I attached here? It seems that the translation was reverted to an older state.

There should have been an update to the German msg file, faq_index.hlp and boardusage.hlp. The corresponding files with the "formal" suffix are for german_formal.

I have attached an update to the German translation. It should be in sync now with the current CVS version of the English translation.

By the way, there seems to be one problem with the script tr_status used for determining the status of the translations. If a string in a translation is the same as the original English string, the string is marked as untranslated. However, there are some texts that doesn't need to be translated - like for example "Administrator", which is the same in English and German.

Committed, see http://cvs.prohost.org/c/index.cgi/FUDforum/chngview?cn=11909

I don't think it's the script's fault. There is no fool-proof way for it to know if a given message was actually translated or not. To solve this problem we will have to migrate all messages to GNU gettext (*.po) files.

Best regards.

I also think that this can't be solved without changing how translations work in FUDform. Maybe a way that could work would be to add only really translated strings to the translations. If FUDforum can't find a string in the translation it would use the English string. This should actually be possible without changing the current system completely. However, I don't know whether this should really be done (just to know the status of the translations more precisely). And probably I should have started the discussion after my holiday...

I have updated the Wiki page manually with the new information about the German translation.
