I thoughtt his would only return the topic messages in a forum, not the replies to those topics.

Is there any way to only return the topics from a particular category/forum, and not people's replies to it?

To get an RSS feed you need to add &basic=1 to the URl.

No there is not, short of identifying the relavent messages by id.
