I get the same error ...

1.. My backup (FUDforum_20_11_2006_11_07.fud.gz) was created successfully, according to the log
2. I deleted FudForum completely from my system
3. I dropped and recreated the database
4. I reinstalled from scratch and was able to login and use the "vanilla" system
5. I tried to import FUDforum_20_11_2006_11_07.fud.gz, again through the form .... still I immediately get the following error:
?797 ?1164167196?(/home/eunivers/FUDforum/include/theme/default/db.inc:72<br />

6. Reinstalled FUDforum again
7. Changed admimport.php
changed => @set_time_limit(60000);
uncommented => define('recovery_mode', 1);
added => $_POST['path'] = '/home/eunivers/FUDforum/FUDforum_20_11_2006_11_07.fud.gz';
8. Ran Forum Consistency
9. Unlocked forum's files
10. Ran from the command line:
php -q admimport.php
Nothing appeared to happen ... no new entries in error log
11. commented out => define('recovery_mode', 1);
12. I tried to import FUDforum_20_11_2006_11_07.fud.gz, again through the form

When you installed the new forum it was fully operational I presume? Then you went to admin import panel and tried to import the data dump, did it give you any progress messages or right away jumped to an error?

Yes...reinstalled as fully operational...original backup log showed backup created successfully. Import failed immediately ... no progress.
It is apparent this code is buggy. I've lost 3 weeks of work if I can't restore. Any way to break apart the .FUD backup file to retore the database only?

How big is your backup file?
You can also try to open the admimport.php script and uncomment the
<?php define('recovery_mode', 1); ?>
line.
