Hello all!
This is a fairly straightforward question, I hope. I know that I can subscribe myself (or users) to a forum, so that when a new topic is created, I (or my users) are informed of this.
I also know that I can subscribe myself to any topic in which I have replied. (I have this set to default as an option.)
Here's where I'm not sure; there is a hidden part of my forums which is for the management team of an education charity. A good percentage of the team would never normally visit the forums. Now, I'm happy to subscribe them so that they are informed if any new topics are made. The thing is, what if there are replies made to this topic, but they haven't signed up to it? Will they receive notifications when a new post is made, or will they actually have to make a pointless post in order that they be subscribed and be made aware of further replies?
In other words, does subscribing to a forum so that you're informed of new topics mean that you're automatically subscribed to receive information of any replies made within that new topic?

OK, I'm sending them a note to say that it is *their* responsibility to follow the link when they're informed of a new topic and click the "Subscribe to topic" option that appears above each post.
However, I would prefer it if the email that is sent out to them contained "Subscribe to topic" as an option in it, alongside the current ones of "quote", "reply", and "unsubscribe".
How would I go about doing this?

You need to modify the notification code, so if a person is subscribed to a forum, they get notifications about all messages. This involves changing the notification query inside the imsg_edt.inc.t file.

Could you explain that a little better I am not seeing how I as an admin can subscribe others to a forum, maybe I am missing something, or miss understanding what you meant!
After a quick look all I found was this from the general section of the admin panel (All Message Forum Notification: If enabled, subscribers to a forum will receive notifications about every new message in the forum, rather then just new topics in the forum.)
I would appreciate knowing, the question you posed is a small part of what we were trying to figure out in setting up special groups and it would be nice to know about or to be able too install.
For that matter if you have figured out how to effectively modify the imsg_edt.inc.t file as Ilia suggested I would be thankful for any insight you might have gained.
I am new to this so explain things very, very carefully!

Well, right now notifications are send based on a list of subscribers inside the forum_notify/thread_notify tables. If you want people to be notified of all posts you need to auto-subcribe them by entering their user id and forum id into the forum_notify table. Then you need to modify the code responsible for notifying users of new topics based on forum_notify table to notify people of ALL messages for the relevant forum.

Sorry, that was me being dumb. I was miles off the point, assuming I could log in as others and toggle the "subscribe" option for them.

I can't even work out where imsg_edt.inc.t is placed, so not much chance of helping you. When I do get around to it though, I'll make a point to comment here or PM you.

Ok! I understand, You could do that if you knew their password, so you could reset it after you had subscribed them, or if you were willing to notify them of a new password you had set for that purpose....But that seems too labor intensive.
but it was a good thought.

Ok again, I am new to this and most of the replies are way over my head, and I have to struggle to understand the small things.
The ability to subscribe groups just sounded like a good idea! Maybe we will get around to it some time, and when we do hopefully we will be able to share a clearly articulated description with others instead of some of the cryptic responses I normally find.
right now I am working on getting my header fixed so the forum will render correctly in IE.
Actually I have fixed the problem already and am just finishing up the loose ends to share what I found out and archive the solution in case I need it again.
I am new to this so explain things very, very carefully!
