Unconfirmed user message but no such user (V2.7.7) [message #40157]

I was looking in my error log regarding another problem I mentioned elsewhere, and found the following message

[Error] ERROR: Your account is not yet confirmed
[Message Sent to User] You have not confirmed your account via e-mail yet

1. If you have not received a confirmation e-mail, click here
2. If (email address) is not your correct e-mail address, click here

[User IP] (IP address)
[Requested URL] http://(myforum)/index.php?t=uc&
[Referring Page] http://(myforum)/index.php?t=error&

When I tried to look up "email address" to see who it was, I got a "no user found" message.

Based upon the email address I think I know which user it is, and it is one that is confirmed. I wonder if he was trying to change to a new email address in his profile when he got this message. Any idea what could be happening?

Edit -- never mind on this one. Apparently this is what happens if they change their email address and don't notice there's a confirmation email
