The styles change ONLY if there has been a modification made to the layout templates of the forum. This is a pretty rare occurance that generally only occurs when upgrading between major versions.
When the style files get replaced, a backup is ALWAYS made inside the errors/.backup directory so that restoring of the style is easily done.
