I was wondering if a solution has ever been found for this issue. I'm in pretty much the same situation on a new install (Apache, MySQL, and PHP all current Red Hat versions...FUD Forum also current release).

Things I've noticed:
Registration returns users back to birth date page w/o error
Cannot add new categories...no error
Posting (as root...only current user) errors (same as AliMan)
