I really want to move the old posts from my old forum software to FUDforum.

Each individual post in my old forum is a text file containing
lines like the following:

POSTER>Ron Miller
EMAIL>
DATE>Monday, 4 November 2002, at 11:26 p.m.
PREVIOUS>
NEXT>
then the message itself

I understand I would have to search the FUDforum database to see if the username existed, if not then create it.
The date code would have to be translated into whatever format FUDforum stores its dates in.

I'm not sure about the threaded nature aspect though... As I understand it, a forum in FUDforum can have multiple 'topics' Replies are posted underneath each topic.
example:

Topic
|
|-reply1
|
|-reply2

etc with each reply being only indented under the topic itself. It looks to me like FUDforum does not support a 'real' threaded model like the following:

Topic
|
|-reply1
| |
| |-reply1.1
|
|-reply2
| |
| |-reply2.1
| | |
| | |-reply2.1.1
| | |-reply2.1.2
| |
| |-reply2.2
|
|-reply3

The above is the kind of threaded view that my old forum software supports, hence the 'PREVIOUS>' and 'NEXT>' fields in each post.

I'm unsure of how to import them into FUDforum and still retain the original threaded-tree structure, or if its even possible.

EDITED: I was mistaken, FUDforum does support a true tree-threaded model, but only when you quote someone's message is your reply indented under the quoted message not the topic. Still need help on how to import my old one into FUDforum.

Any pointers, tips, clarifications, or corrections are welcome and requested.

Thank you,

Ron Miller

FudForum supports this kind of threading too.
Every reply has a value indicating to which message it refers to (sth like PREVIOUS in the example).

Nope, use small "reply" button under the message insted of big "Post reply" over the message and see the diference (try it at test forum).

Ah... umm, sounds a bit confusing to me. Perhaps I'll edit the button graphics to make it more clear. "Post Reply" would become "Topic reply" or "Reply to this Topic" and the little "Reply" button would become "Message reply" or "Reply to this message".

Thanks for pointing that out about the Reply buttons.

Prottoss, do you think that renaming them this way would be a good idea. At least changing the big one to "Topic reply" or "Reply to this topic" would be a good idea in my opinion.

Dunno, it sounds fairly clear as it is... Course I am a little biased Razz, I would like to avoid long winded button labels such as 'Reply to this Topic' and 'Topic reply' just does not sound right to me. I think the reply button is fairly clear, haven't had any complaints and I know for a fact that this forum is used on several sites where the user base is very much NOT computer savy. Since those users had no problems with button labels I am reluctant to change them.
