Hi

I'm not sure this is a FUD-Issue. It's the first webserver i administer myself, so please be gentle Wink

I've downloaded the latest stable release, uncompressed it, created the neccessary directories and chmod'ed them to 777.

Started the install.php

Server root: /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/bbs/
Forum root: /usr/local/apache2/forum/

Error at step 1:

Couldn't open /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/bbs/blank.gif for write

At this point the directories bbs/admin and bbs/help have been created and filled with some files. And: chmod for bbs has been set back to 666...strange.

Any suggestions?

Hi.
This sounds very much like a conflict with different user ids. Is php running in safe mode on ur server?
to find out u might need to run phpinfo()
bye

Your like living on the edge my friend, Apache 2 *yikes* Wink

Which, mpm model are you using? PHP support for Apache 2 is experimental @ best especially with version 4.2.3. I strongly recommend downgrading to Apache 1.3.27

Should i report this effect somewhere? php.net? apache.org?

More intersting: WHAT should i report. I'm still not sure what this error was all about...

Anyway, many thanks.

Well, a new version of PHP 4.3.0 should be released soon, it still won't have full Apache 2 support, but it'll be a much better supported then in 4.2.3. My personal recommendation is to hold off upgrading to Apache 2 until PHP 5.0.
There are numerous reasons, into which I won't go into at the moment...
