The avatar table would be empty because it is there only to store built-in avatars avaliable to all users and not personal avatars each user uploads. It could be browser + caching issue since some browser tend to dislike images without an extension.

Lack of extension should not be a problem to any modern a browser, the 'real' problem is that the avatar URLs all result in a 404 (file not found) message. You need to see what is the cause of this, I doubt it is anything forum related.

Sorry, but lack of extension IS a problem to my Mozilla 1.4 RC1 and IExplorer 6.0.sp2!
Also I can see extensions even here, on this Support Forum. For example this one is a ".gif":

I suppose, belmax has right and lack of extension was a bug in 2.3.8. Can you confirm my opinion?
