After completing step #1, I get this error:

Archive did pass checksum test, CORRUPT ARCHIVE!
If you've encountered this error it means that you've:
downloaded a corrupt archive
uploaded the archive in ASCII and not BINARY mode
your FTP Server/Decompression software/Operating System added un-needed cartrige return (' ') characters to the archive, resulting in archive corruption.

In a post I found in the installation forum, this was addressed, and the answer was to upload in ASCII mode.

What does it mean to upload in ASCII mode?

I downloaded the tar.gz file, but not through FTP. I just clicked on the link provided (http://fud.prohost.org/download/FUDforum2_20030123.tar.gz).
From the command line I gunzipped it and tar'd it.

Help a newbie to Linux and FUD, please!

Thanks in advance!

Clark

when you upload the file to your server you need to make sure that you upload it properly

look in your ftp program's docs for info on how to do this.

for example

wsftp (in 'classic mode') has 3 buttons between the ftp server side and the local file side - upload, download and mode switch - this last button will switch between 'auto', 'ascii' and 'binary' upload mode.

VERY important.

I'm not sure I understand. On the "Download" page I just click the link and Mozilla asks me if I want to open or save. I don't use a FTP program.

I even checked the downloaded file with that "md5sum" (?) and it checked out.

Which PHP version are you using?

The best way for you to get the file would be:
wget http://fud.prohost.org/download/FUDforum2_20030123.tar.gz
tar zxvf FUDforum2_20030123.tar.gz
copy install.php into proper dir
run install.php via the browser.

are you downloading the tar file directly to your webserver or are you downloading it to a windows machine and THEN uploading it to a webserver?

note i said UPLOADING not downloading

Very Happy
I got it! Thanks for the help. I think the problem was moving files around with winSCP. I did the "download", the unzip and tar, and moving (uploading) via the command promt through putty. Then the install worked.
Very Happy
