If I understand you correctly you are not using the default forum PNGs but rather some you've made yourself? If that is correct could you include 1 or two of these images (attach them) so I may try to replicate the problem with those images.

I have tested the Alpha channel code in IE 6.0 and it did work properly with forum icons. So, I am uncertain why this suddenly happening.
