PHP usually sends headers just before any content is sent to the browser.

if you:

echo "some text";
header('Content-type: text/plain');

you'll get a warning, and the header is never sent.

if you wrapp your code in an output buffer, you can place the headers anywhere.

ob_start();
echo "some text";
header('Content-type: text/plain');
ob_end_flush();
