It appears that I am far from the first to encounter this issue, and
that the easiest solution involves mod_rewrite. Here is the info that
seems most pertinent in case anyone is interested:

Looks as if I need to go off and learn about mod_rewrite now (and
ignorance was *so* blissful!). Thanks all.
