maybe this is something with my hosting site? If I make changes and leave things alone for an hour or so, then all's well. I noticed in a few old forum entries where people had strange problems that they tried a few days later and things had mysteriously cleared up.

normal file changes on my hosting server take affect in seconds. hmmm.
