You see those despite the group permissions setting because you are an admin, hence you bypass all permission checks.

You see those because you are logged in as an admin, the page generation times you will always see. It is other users for whom you've turned this off.

My thought was to make a copy of the default theme and modify it incrementally to learn what I am doing. My theme folder on my server, however, is completely locked. Use the 'file unlock' control panel to unlock forum's files & directories. Once you do that you'll be able to modffy the files via FTP. Making a copy of the theme directory you can do via 'Theme Manager' by using the 'Create New Template Set' option.
