Hello,
I searched my newsgroups for Apache and got a Japan hit only. So I
have a question. On my new Win7 laptop I have to install this software
but the Apache website download puzzles me. It lists several files:
Source: httpd-2.4.7.tar.bz2 [ PGP ] [ MD5 ] [ SHA1 ]
Source: httpd-2.4.7.tar.gz [ PGP ] [ MD5 ] [ SHA1 ]
Binaries
Security and official patches
Other files
but gives no clue what to download, how to run an install, etc.
Have I missed something obvious,

Apache is an HTTP _server_. Therefore, searching for newsgroups that have
“server” in their name will quickly get you the correct one.

Download and install WAMP (http://www.wampserver.com/en/) and get
Apache, PHP and MySQL plus PHPMyAdmin to create a dvlopmnt nvironmnt on
a Windows machin, then use the newsgroup alt.apache.configuration
instead of this group for questions about setting up apache.

Bad answer. WAMP is simple to set up but one doesn't learn necessary
things like how to configure Apache for any installation other than what
WAMP gives you.
This is *exactly* why we are pointing him to a newsgroup where he will
get *good* answers.

Really, the easiest solution is to install something like VirtualBox and
install any Linux distro (eg Ubuntu) as a virtual machine. *Every* Linux
distribution includes Apache, PHP, and MySql in the distro's package
repository. Distros like Ubuntu have a nice point-and-click package management
system, where you can just do a few points and clicks and have a LAMP system
up with almost no effort at all.

These are sources and need to be compiled, which is somewhat non-trivial task,
partitularly under MS-Windows.

The Apache site probably does NOT have binary installer for Apache's http,
esp. for MS-Windows. You can try to search for 'WAMP installer' or something
like that, but setting up a LAMP server as a virtual machine might actually be
both easier and will likely work better. While building Apache HTTPD for
MS-Windows is possible, it is not going to be easy and it is a *minority*
thing, and something of an job for an expert.

There are Apache, PHP, and MySQL versions for Windows. There are
distributions like XAMPP that make setup easy. Using a VM instead makes
sense if you want to deploy on a *Linux* server but absolutely do not want
to dual-boot to Linux for the development environment.
The OP has not stated production requirements so as to allow you to make
that assessment. Indeed, the fact that they have not found the Windows
versions yet is indication that a VirtualBox setup would be way over their
head. You have given poor advice.

from where you can download a .msi file for 2.2.25. This is an
installer which works on win7 - I have apache 2.2.25 running as I type.
AIUI, there is no windows installer for a more recent version of apache
- if anyone know anything to the contrary I'd like to hear it.
There is also the apache users mailing list which you may or may not
find useful.

FWIW, WAMP (http://www.wampserver.com/en/) has Apache 2.4.4 for both
32 and 64 Windows.

Folks,
I reply to myself because many have contributed so cannot reply to
all. The response variety is an education and I thank all for the
help. I remain a novice:-).
I took your commentary to my local retail guruish type dealer and he
comfortably installed Apache, PHP, mySQL and Filezilla. Am now up and
running, happily testing my website before subsequent upload to the
ISP server.
