In a 2.6.0 installation (upgraded from 2.5.2) we have the following strange behaviour:

When I click on a link contained in the notification emails send when a private message has arrived or a posting in a subscribed forum or topic is done I see the following behaviour:
  1. The dialog "ERROR: you are not logged on" appears
  2. I click in the login button and complete the login dialog
  3. after that I'm at the forum home page, and not, as I would expect, at the PM or posting page.
  4. now, being logged in, I click again at the link in the notification email
  5. again, I end up in the "ERROR: you are not logged on" dialog

There is now way to get directly to the PM or posting which is advertised in the notification email. That used to work before with Mozilla as mail client and web browser....and we are grateful for every hint to fix that.

If you are already logged it and enter the URL to a private message from an e-mail notification it should work (works for me on this forum).

As stated in the first posting under 4. and 5., it does unfortunately not work when I follow the notification link after a successful login, I end again in the "ERROR" page. In detail:

On a fresh system (Mozilla just started) in click in my email on

http://forum.gsi.de/index.php?t=pmsg_view&id=56

and see the "ERROR: You are not logged in" page with URL

http://forum.gsi.de/index.php?t=error&rid=0&S=622ce33971a0062190f07 b781603c71a

after I complete the login I get the forum home page with URL

http://forum.gsi.de/index.php?&S=622ce33971a0062190f07b781603c71a&S Q=27b2f5f768ddb199c345254acdf98d56

Now I click again on the notification link in my email, get again the "ERROR: You are not logged in" page, now with the URL

http://forum.gsi.de/index.php?t=error&rid=0&S=5459cfe7779911cc14793 c621883154c

What astonishes me a little is that the number after S= changed, when I retried the notification link. So apparently a new session was created. Could that be the source of the problem ? And as also said, we use 2.6.0, and I just wonder whether there were known issues in this direction with 2.6.0.

Are you using COOKIE or URl sessions?

The cookie option in the login dialog was on, and I checked, that the cookies were indeed set. For example, after a clean start (old cookies deleted) I got after the first login a cookie like

Name: fud_session_1071143156
Value: a0b3339b7b589095848b8fe674697b1b

When I now reenter the notification URL, the login dialog comes again. When I inspect the cookie now, it has been changed, has a new expiration date, and the contents

Name: fud_session_1071143156
Value: 161cbfb30436e0d404bfcc9d258c9415

The value matched in both cases the S= parameter of the URL.

Do you per chance have session cookies enabled?

No, we don't.

Everything was left to the default, except for URL sessions, which are enabled.

Can you please disable them and see if the problem still occurs?

Hi Ilia,

I installed a new forum from scratch and left everything but email notification with body unchanged.

When I get a notification and click reply there without being currently logged in, I get a Unauthorized page, then I choose login, give my credential and then the forum directs me to the start page, not the post I want to reply to nor the message editor.

As I figured out right now, the same happens on this support forum: I wanted to reply to your post, logged in and got to the start page.

It does not seem to be an installation/configuration problem so.

My browser is a mozilla 1.4 running on Debian GNU/Linux 3.0. I allowed your site to set cookies, the cookie it set is:

fud_session_1010519835 = 64b4391f0df8ce98e52e2b150493d34d

Regards,
Christopher

Oh my,

I think I missed the whole thing, I'm sorry. Embarassed

I thought the "always going to the start page after login" was the bug, but it is not ( but it's a serious feature request Smile )

When you log in and click on the reply link in the notification mail you logged out and asked to login again ... (infinite loop)

Now I disabled URL sessions with the effect that I locked up the whole forum: It took my credentials without any error message but did not log me in properly.

I had to restore the previous behaviour by restoring $FUD_OPT_1 from 1202648155 to 1202648283 in include/GLOBALS.php.

So, what can I do about this? Any clues?
Is it save to install a completely new instance and migrate the existing tables?

I'll attach our GLOBALS.php, maybe it helps.

If disabling of URL sessions locked up the forum it would imply that cookies are not working for some reason. Review your cookies settings and make sure that the forum's cookie validation options are either disabled or do not interfere with cookie processing.

Hi Ilia,

thank you so much for the hint. I forgot to change the cookie path after "moving" the forum form http://real.server.gsi.de/FUDforum2/ to http://own.cname.gsi.de/, so cookies were stored but could not be read anymore ...

Why is this a user changeable setting anyhow?

So that you can easily alter it after moving to a different domain/server.
