Hi
I'm that i could setup a forum with FUDforum. Everyting work well.

I only wonder that googlebot always only read my index page, but not the Threads.
Does i only have to wait and it simply will take a time ?
or does i need to setup FUDforum in a special was so that google can read my pages ?

Thanx a lot
Kabir

http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/robots.html gives a pretty good explanation about how WWW robots work in general while http://www.google.com/bot.html gives answers about the Googlebot in particular.
You might find your answer there. =)

If that doesn't help, try enabling the PATH INFO setting in the admin panel - it makes indexing pages for search engines easier.

If you use PATH_INFO style URLs google and any other spider for that matter will have easier time indexing your pages. That said I know that this very forum that does not use PATH_INFO is hit by googlebot fairly frequently across all URLs.

I wonder.... I am not an admin, I am a user only, so I have no access to logs, but it seems that www.chemistry.com forums are not indexed. There is no robots.txt file, yet I haven't seen a single message indexed by Google. I wonder if it is not a problem with too long series of hexadecimal digits in URLs? I am not a SEO guru either, but from what I have learnt search engines don't like such URLs.

Anybody with any experience?

Best,
Borek

Google works with URLs just fine, for example take a look @ the following url:
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=index+site%3Afudforum. org&btnG=Search&meta=

It searches this forum for the word "index" with great success. If the site you mentioned is not searchable it is far more likely due to search engine being told not to index it or not being able to do so.

I still have my doubts. URLs I am referring too looks like that:

http://www.chemistry.com/index.php?t=msg&th=1339&start=0&rid=76 5&S=6fb1af206f1d3fcff78cd242c1470386

All other parameters looks OK, but I suppose S is indigestible.

There are two ways I know about to tell Google to not index site - one is through the robots.txt (no robots.txt on the chemistry.com), second is through NOINDEX/NOFOLLOW - no such META tags in the pages code. I asked admin of the site and he didn't do anything deliberately to prevent indexing.

As there is nothing done to prevent site from being indexed, it should be - but it isn't.

Best,
Borek

Well it is possible the site is IP blocked, for example if I try to access the URL my browser eventually times out. Same could be true when Google tries to connect to the site.

I have never any problems with accessing the site and - before the forums were started - site was indexed (I believe site content changed completely about half year ago, but I can be wrong).

To summarize: as I understand you are not aware of any possible problems, and nobody reported problems with FUDforums indexing when the S parameter is used in URL?

Best,
Borek

this is true and also what you are running into is jsut becasue it is indexed does not mean it will rank well at all.

I have a series of mods for phpbb that I made that help greatly with bot indexing your sites. I am also looking around and seeing what other forum software it may work well with. At this point I'm going to look at fudforum and what would be incolved in porting it. I think it should go pretty easy though. If anybody is interested please let me know.

You can see the kinds of links my mods make here:

I would be much interested in a mod that would include topic/message titles in the URL. Any suggestions?

You'll probably need to do this:

Replace all links to topics/messages with

/forum_url/subject

where subject string has undergone the following treatment:
preg_replace("![^A-Za-z0-9]!", "_", $subject)

Then use mod_rewrite to redirect those urls to a page that would fetch the actual message id based on the subject string and take the user to the appropriate page.

Yes, I am aware of this theoritically but the template system in FUDforum is very difficult to get along with quickly.

I simply cannot find where the links in forums/topics/messages are. Hints?

Well, there are many places that link to messages, I suspect the places you want to work with are: thread.tmpl (topic listing page) and msg.tmpl (message listing page)
