Having installed fudforum 2.6.0 as it comes with phpGroupWare I was happy to have such a powerful tool to work with.

But after only a few postings and some changed options, I encountered a problem: suddenly all my postings contained no user name!

The only thing I remember changing was giving myself admin-permissions with phpGroupWare, although I cannot imagine any connection.

So, I tried working without admin-permissions and not found myself incapable of entering any text because I was not recognized as registered user any more. And now I think, that that's exactly the problem: being not registered I had admin-permissions and was able to enter a posting, but there was no name connected to it.

What can I do?

This is something that is fixed in latest version of egroupware, try upgrading.

That's good to know, thanks. But is egroupware the same as phpGroupWare? And is upgrading within phpGroupWare a problem? Or can it be done as easily as if fudforum were working alone?

egroupware is not the same as phpgroupware, I only maintain the forum in egroupware.

Ok, I think I'll give it a try. But do you know which version of fudforum comes with egroupware? I just tried the demo version at www.egroupware.org and there they still use 2.6.0. Do I have to update directly after the installation?

Unfortunately I cannot confirm that. I just managed to get XAMPP running on my local machine (because I don't want to bother my webserver admin just for testing) and then installed eGroupWare. It worked very smoothly and my first impression was that it is a little more powerful than phpGroupWare and I didn't find any bugs at first.

But then I klicked on the fudforum-Button and all I got was the following message (as admin user):

The requested URL /egroupware/fudforum/3814588639/adm/admglobal.php was not found on this server.

So I tried the same as a user without admin privileges and got the following:

The 'files/' (/outside/webserver/docroot) directory exists, however webserver has no write permissions to that directory.

Perhaps there are permissions set wrongly, but I have no idea where to loo, as there seems to be no directory with that name. What can I do?

You need to make sure the files/ directory is writable by the webserver.

That's what I thought. But I can't find any directory with that name.

I assume it has to be somewhere in the egroupware tree, but there definitely is none. In fact, the whole fudforum directory seems to be nearly empty. There's a directory called 3814588639, which only contains index.php, and then we have CVS, inc, index.php, setup and templates. That's all. Something missing?

The files/ directory is something you need to specify if egroupware settings and probably a create a directory for and chmod it 777 so that the webserver can write to it.

Oh, now I got it! I had to create the files/ directory myself and give its name and location in the egroupware's setup.

Now I'll try it out. Thanks a million!

BTW: How often do you change the release for fudforum inside egroupware? Every time there is an update for fudforum? Or just if you reach a certain release number?

I am planning to do a major upgrade of FUDforum in eGroupWare soon. But so far the changes I've made to it have been fairly minor and mostly made to address bugs. So, you can pretty much assume that each month there is some sort of an update.
