Does anyone have experience making logo's. I've visited a couple of sites, but they all want money for it.

For example:

vistaprint.com wants $19.99 for something like this:
index.php?t=getfile&id=5836&private=0

logomaker.com wants $49 for something like this:
index.php?t=getfile&id=5835&private=0

Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated.

I've poked around at making logos, but I'm pretty much a hack that gets one on the dartboard now and then by blind luck.

Having said that, I tried my hand at a few and you're welcome to any of them that you think might be acceptable, or to suggest any modifications you'd like. With any luck there will be folks with real logo skills contributing too.

A couple of more standard ones...

index.php?t=getfile&id=5837&private=0

index.php?t=getfile&id=5839&private=0

And then a few variations on a "classy" theme...

index.php?t=getfile&id=5843&private=0

index.php?t=getfile&id=5844&private=0

Thanks Kerry! I especially like the last one. Anyway, let's see if we get other suggestions before we make a final decision.

No worries - my skillsets are in music, too bad you don't need any audio stuff done. *That* I could sort you out on properly Very Happy

Yeah, agreed, that last one is more promising than some of the others. I'll tweak the angle of the plume to work better with the line of the "F" in "forum" and I definitely prefer the lighter outlining of FUD in the logo before it, but here's hoping we wind up with more "pro" contributions, there's no amount of tweaking that can replace that "eye".

I've got to say those two commercial logos you posted don't do much for me - we should be able to do better than that.

I agree with Naudefj about the last one though I would prefer it with the traditional gold color (at least for the FUD portion of it), and some sort of border; yet I don't believe any of them so far truly does FUDforum justice, at least not yet.

So please do take your time in making a final decision!

Tried that one with the yellow text - it got kind of cluttered looking with three different things going on in one logo. I'll poke at it a bit more; meanwhile here are three riffs on the older logo.

I could get some warm fuzzy's over the last one. I copied it and reduced it down to 160X49 which was the size of the old logo on the admin panel.

Unfortunately it became illegible; the quill and the swoop of the f create too large of a background area which counts as part of the size.

If you could reduce the size of the quill, lighten it to a charcoal grey, and get the swoop and quill both within the border so it is about 160x49px, I might start getting excited!

As it is it looks pretty damn elegant though so you might be on to something.

You might also try beefing up forum and moving the quill over to the end of the m as opposed to the f.

Great input - I did like the quill and swoop extending out a little - it makes it more dynamic - but you're right about illegibility, I've tightened it up to minimize that. Let me know if you think I should get it in tighter. I shrunk the "F", added some heft to "orum" and moved the quill to the end of the "m". I tried it as charcoal and it did look like too much was going on - but how about a gold pen?

index.php?t=getfile&id=5853&private=0

[I might need to get the visibility of the FUD up with a bit more outlining].

Here's a variant -

index.php?t=getfile&id=5854&private=0

A bit more refined - more "orum" and a bit more slant to the text...

The old FUD Logo I am using for comparison with yours is 160 x 49px, while yours are 800px × 400px consisting of mostly white space surrounding the actual image so it is hard to get a realistic idea of how it would look on the page.

I like 18-jpg with the gold quill at the end of the m (as though writing), yet the FUD looks flat and lifeless unlike the FUD in 21 and 21a which is more rounded and pronounced like I think 18-jpg should be.

The new 17a is not quite what I thought it would be, it looks fine as is but reduced the quill just appears as a vague shadow.

So is it possible to combine the 2 elements of 18 and 21 while keeping all the graphics inside the blue box?

The others with the quill background aren't blowing my skirt up though. As an aside thought you might consider doing one with "Powered By" above the FUD.

Coming up!

Yep, the logo program I'm using is ArtText on OSX and it makes everything easy - except choice and size of output formats. I'm working large because I'm thinking of general branding as much as logo here - trying to get a look and elements that scale up and down for use elsewhere - and if we get the general "vibe" sorted I'll switch into refining icon sized versions. Bear in mind of course that I'll be *delighted* if a pro graphics person steps up and contributes something that blows these away, I've got no ego invested in my graphic skills. Still been trying to think of a way we can incorporate sound, though Very Happy.

OK - attaching the plume to the tail of the "M" means it's got to start at the midline which shrinks it down too small to be recognizable after a certain point. This might be a compromise, or we could just lose the plume altogether if needed (although I do like the "writing" thing).

I like-ze plume!

When I reduce it down it still looks pretty good! Except for the white, although it does lose some impact in the transistion.

Lest it get overlooked since it's in a different thread - fudidudi's logo is small and gets the point across with minimal screen real estate:

I have seen that as well, however I believe that it would NOT be wise to refer to FUDforum simply as FUD because of the negative impression associated with that term.

People are funny that way.

That is indeed an acronym with a very particular resonance in North America Very Happy

Merry Christmas to you and Frank and your families, Mr. W, and to the FUD community. It's a bit staggering to think about where the platform and the community were a mere year ago, and about the changes wrought by the work Frank's done this year and the contributions you and others have made.

LOL Very Happy I'm certain most words have a negative connotation, somewhere, in some foreign cultures and circles, Americans are a small percentage of the world's population. It may even culminate to be one of those classic marketing strategies whereby creating some extra attention. Site's like FARK.com thrive on the concept.

Got the trademark?

FUD (pronounced like the English word food) is a brand name for hot dogs, sausages, bacon and cold cuts produced by the Mexican company Sigma Alimentos, which itself is part of the ALFA industrial conglomerate.

Recently, Sigma Alimentos has licensed a US company to produce and distribute FUD branded products in the USA, principally to sell in areas of heavy Mexican immigration where the brand name is already well known.

The name FUD is an acronym for the Spanish words Fino, Unico y Delicioso (Refined, Unique & Delicious). There are other Spanish language neologisms coined by the Sigma Alimentos marketing department to promote FUD. For example, the word Fudgolazo as seen on Spanish language television and grocery store advertising, refers to a contest held by FUD for tickets to the 2006 FIFA World Cup (golazo is a Spanish word meaning a critical or important goal in a soccer game.

Very true. But it's less about absolutes and more about how a term reads to your particular target market. It's just one of those things; sometimes things that work really well for one target market don't translate as well as one might hope to another. This French beverage (by Perrier), for example, hasn't been seen much in North America.

http://medias.blog.lemonde.fr/files/2007/03/pschitt.1174120918.jpg

Mr. W's Wiki link pretty much nails how the term is immediately perceived in the community of computer-literate English-speaking North Americans (not an easily-dismissed part of FUDForum's target market).

But I couldn't agree more with your other sentiment. If it's going to stay FUDforum, then there's potential for humour and positive publicity in deliberately milking the other meaning of the term - like "FUDforum: all forum - no FUD."

Is this where the 'uncompromising' bit enters into it Laughing

If being refered to as FUD is such a hangup, maybe worth considering a different trademark name altogether. FUD is not an issue in the minds of developers looking for an FOSS application that does the job well.. concerned more about features, speed, ease of use, standards compliance, etc etc.

I think naudefj said it best when he suggested "taking the FUD out of FUDforum".

A logo for FOSSforum is going to be even more challenging. Maybe we should stick to FUDforum for now. Discussions about the name can be found here and here.

I agree, FUDforum is what it is and changing the name makes little sense, I just avoid referring to it as just FUD so as not to perpetuate the idea yet it seems to have the opposite effect.

True is that.

I originally did a logo with FUD and the word forum underneath it (but never posted that version), i'll resurrect that and upload it. Improved standards compliance and smoother styling alone will launch this forum way beyond than the competition IMHO, no FUD needed.

Not disagreeing but I believe it goes far beyond that. A forum (regardless of the software type and there are many) is worthless without users particularly participating users, and my experience has been that the average user shies away from FUDforum because it is unfamiliar to them.

However once a user actually tries it they generally really like the features it provides, but they are still reluctant to participate too much because so few understand and participate with them.

More than that is that the average user admin who decides to use FUDforum faces an enormous learning curve which makes them less likely to succeed simply because much of the information needed to administer it to its fullest extent is over the head of the average user/admin.

Naudefj has made great strides in making the forum more user friendly and easier to understand, but there is still a ways to go.

Bottom line for me is that the average citizen needs to have forums available for their local areas which are not controlled by corporations or politicians, and the only way to accomplish that is to make it as easy as possible to learn and use effectively.

I've added the two suggested logo's to the wiki's front page. Both of them look stunning in their own right!

Any other nominations would be greatly appreciated.

Nice logo's! I'm sure we will be able to use them as well.

These logos create a feeling of secure forum / safe choice (which FUDforum definitely is). However, they don't really convey the core values of communication, community and collaboration.

Any other opinions or logo suggestions?

Hi Kerry,

Can you please make square version of your logo as well?

'FUD' on line 1, 'forum' below it with the plume to the right.

Best regards.

Frank
