It would be nice if the upgrading process were not as destructive as it is currently. I mainly think of the customization of messages here. Since we use the forum in an educational institution and not in a web site for fun, I needed to change some (many) of the messages to fit our needs.

Since the translation was modified, all these changes are destroyed and must be redone. This is too much pain.

What I suggest is this:

let's have another message file, that will be used to customize the forum's and override the default translations. Then when the forum gets updated, only the default translations are changed and any messages declared in the new file retain their "changed" status.

Maybe this would be desirable for templates too.

This cannot be helped (unfortunately) because without these changes the forum will simply not work. However as far as translations go, in 2.6.0 there is some flexibility and you can actually do what you want. By creating an msg file with JUST the changed text. Thus your changes will overwrite the defaults.

Well, this overriding was EXACTLY what I wanted Smile

So I'll just have to do it once more after upgrading to 2.6.0. Smile Smile
