Now that we are on the "left-side" kick ( for PDAs, etc ), how about moving the buttons to the left side???

For example:
Preview, spell-check, Create topic/Submit Reply, Save Draft

And the following:
login, send, update, reset

And swap the following since the latter two are not used nearly as much as the first two.
reply, quote for profile, pm

and I am sure there are more.

No, and here are few reasons why?

1) Majority of users are right handed and as such your cursor is generally on the right side of the screen making it easier to click on the buttons on the right hand side.

2) Vast majority of applications (non just those on the web) display buttons on the right, by having FUDforum do the same, we give the user something that they have gotten used to.

Inflexible standards are often worse then no standards at all. The so called standard was original UBB, which simply got copied as far as basic layout ever since by almost every forum's package. It was not copied because it was good, etc... merely simply because it was there and it is always easier to duplicate that to come up with something original.

The layout had and still has many inherit flaws, which other developers are simply afraid to break because of 'backwards compatibility' reasons. Even if a better idea came across they wouldn't change simply because it might weird out some users. Afterall, any change initialy always encounters stiff resistance.

There is nothing wrong with a standard that makes sense. There is however a problem with following standards blindly.

must be nice to pick and choose which standards to follow and which ones not to follow. Cool

but if it is that small screen you say is so prevalent, the cursor position certainly has much less relevance. And many of the input stuff is on the left anyway. That way they could stay on the left hand side and just move down instead of having to move down and then move to the right.

And we got used to the poster's info on the right, which is where most forums put it, but you moved it to the top so that's not a particularly valid stance for you to take.

And lest I forget the PDAs,, hand-held, tablets, etc that have those extremely smaller screens - putting the buttons on the left certainly makes perfectly logical senes in there and demands a break with the standard of putting them on the right.

Times changes things.

Even on a small screen for the right handed majority (sorry lefties) the mouse movement is from right to left. Meaning that the less you gotta move the mouse the better, no?

On PDAs that are still relatively small market the cursor is not really there, you have a pad with arrows so it does not really matter where the buttons are as long as you can see them.

Heh...

Then again you have complete freedom via the use of templating system to re-arrange the forum's layout so that it suits your needs.
