How do I perform searches for threads / messages created by me or a specified user?

You cannot. You can either search by message body and/or subject or see all messages posted by a particular user.

I found that on the profile page brought up by clikcking on a user's name there's a link to a list of posts by that user. In what respect does that feature differ from the search facility?

Could they be combined to form better filters in a future version?

I think it would be very usefull to combine username with timerange and freetext search to pin down the discussions you're looking for.

The search facility allows you to search for messages by their content. The link you've described allows you to see all messages by a particular user.

Well, that's obviously by design but what about the suggestion I wrote?
