using xampp with above version of apache, but when i click next from step 4 (language) I get a message box - Apache must be shut down. The page then shows the "cannot be displayed" message. I need this forum desperately for running my company, so any help would really be appreciated.

This probably means that PHP has crashed, what version of PHP are you using?

It's just what it says in the XAMPP documentation. I would guess that the 4.3.9 is there for PCs that can't cope with 5+, but I would probably be using the 5.0.2. I doubt they are both installed. Is there a way to check which version I have? I am a beginner to PHP etc.

Try using PHP 4.3.X, PHP 5 has a bug which makes it crash on th 4th step of the forum install process.
