It would be nice if I could unsubscribe from a single topic within a forum to which I am subscribed.

Allow post titles to wrap in the User CP so that the page width doesn't get pushed out by long ones.

You can do that via the subscription manager in your profile.

I checked and it works fine in 800x600.

All I have in the subscription manager is the option to unsubscribe from the forum. I am talking about unsubscribing from the topic (link on the thread display, not subscription manager) so that I don't get notices for it even though I am subscribed to the forum where the topic resides. But on the threads on forums I am subscribed to I see "Subscribe" link, not "Unsubscribe".

As I said, probably not possible. Maybe I do not yet completely understand how subscription works. Still on the learning curve...

Hm. I am usually using a laptop, and my links to new posts in subscribed topics push out if the title is very long. I haven't modified anything from the default for that part of the forum.

Maybe the posters are somehow picking up non-breaking space characters in their titles; it has only happened a couple of times

I think there is a misunderstanding in how subscription system works.

If you are subscribed to a forum you will recieve notifications about any new topics. You will NOT recieve notification about any new message in the forum. To recieve notifications about posts inside a topic you need to be subscribed to that topic.

I'm still having what seems to be a wrap issue in "subscribed forums with new messages". The category/forum links wrap but the "last message" links do not. Running V2.7.2 with no modifications to User CP.

Looks to me like the problem is the "overly" long subject names of latest messages. It also looks like you are using the OLD layout, since the new one does not display this information and therefor does not have a problem.

Hmmm, OK...

addendum: I guess I'm not understanding how I could be using the old layout. I picked up the "show own posts" change when I installed V2.7.2, and that change appears on the CP. Is there something I needed to do other than recompile my themes? These are under "subscribed forums". Which information there is no longer shown?
