In a large research lab we currently use ListServ based mailing lists as communication tool. We plan to migrate to a forum based solution, and FUDforum appears to be the best choice, mainly because it supports attachments (important in the often document-centric discussions), thread views (thus allows reply to posts) and good mailing list integration (important in the transition phase) and powerful rights management (moderator as well as access rights).

Based on current ListServ usage we expect about 1000 users and 100-200 forums in about 10 categories. Most forums are dedicated to internal discussions of specific projects, working groups or committees, and access will thus be restricted to a user group. This results in dozens of partially overlapping user groups.

We are wondering whether it is feasible to cover all this with a single, centrally provided instance of FUDforum, or whether it is better to have several, more dedicated instances. So far we haven't seen any technical reason preventing a single instance, but any feedback and suggestions on such a quite complex setup are highly welcome.
